What’s in the box

Before you begin, confirm you have:

Tip: If anything looks tampered with, do not use the device and contact support immediately.

Quick setup — step by step

  1. Unbox & connect: Plug your Ledger into a computer or phone using the supplied cable. Use the official cable and avoid third-party attachments when possible.
  2. Install Ledger Live: On your computer or phone download Ledger Live from Ledger.com (or use the link above). Install and open the app.
  3. Create or restore a wallet: Choose Create a new device if this is brand-new. If you are recovering from an existing wallet, use Restore device and enter your recovery phrase when prompted.
  4. Set your PIN: Choose a PIN of 6–8 digits (longer is better). Memorize it — never share it.
  5. Write down your recovery phrase: Your device will display a 24-word recovery phrase (sometimes 12 or 18 words depending on model/config). Write each word clearly on the recovery card and store it in a secure, offline place. Do not photograph or store the phrase digitally.
  6. Update firmware & install apps: Use Ledger Live to update firmware (if prompted) and install the apps you need (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Only install apps through Ledger Live.
  7. Add accounts: In Ledger Live, add accounts for the assets you want to manage. Receive addresses appear on both Ledger Live and your device — always verify on the device screen.

Security best practices

Protecting your recovery phrase is the single most important step. Follow these rules:

Warning: If your recovery phrase is exposed, anyone with it can control your funds. Act immediately to transfer funds to a new wallet if you suspect compromise.

Receiving and sending crypto

To receive funds, open Ledger Live, select the account, click Receive, and confirm the address displayed matches the one on your device. Only share addresses — never share private keys or recovery words.

To send funds, create a transaction in Ledger Live and confirm the details on the device screen (amount, destination address, fees). The device digitally signs the transaction; Ledger Live broadcasts it to the network.

Common troubleshooting

Device not detected

Try a different USB cable or port, ensure Ledger Live is up to date, and confirm your OS recognizes USB devices. Rebooting your computer sometimes resolves connection issues.

Forgot PIN

A forgotten PIN requires you to reset the device to factory settings and restore from your recovery phrase. You will need the phrase to regain access to funds.

Firmware update failed

Do not disconnect the device during an update. If an update fails, follow Ledger Live prompts or consult official support; restoring from your recovery phrase onto a fresh device can recover access if needed.

Address mismatch

If the address shown in Ledger Live and on the device differ, do not accept the transaction. Close Ledger Live, reconnect the device, and verify addresses again.

FAQ

Is my recovery phrase the same as a password?

No. Your recovery phrase is a master key that reconstructs your private keys. Treat it like the most critical secret you own.

Can Ledger help recover stolen funds?

No. Ledger cannot access or move your crypto. If funds are stolen, you must use the recovery phrase to move remaining assets to a secure wallet and contact relevant platforms (exchanges) for support.

What if I lose my device?

If you lose the device but have your recovery phrase safe, you can restore your wallet on a new Ledger or compatible hardware wallet. If you lose both device and recovery phrase, funds are irretrievable.

Can I use Ledger with my smartphone?

Yes. Ledger Live is available on Android and iOS. Some devices support Bluetooth; follow device-specific instructions in Ledger Live to connect securely.
